It seems that in trying to achieve a conscious astral projection or OBE the biggest problem is actually exiting ones body. That is putting your consciousness into your astral energy/body and projecting that energy away from the physical body.
Most people including myself can get into the trance state quite easily. The trance state is the state where you body is so relaxed that it is asleep while your mind is awake. This state is noticeable by odd sensations such as a feeling of energy pulses up and down the body and the feeling of falling backwards or feeling like one is floating. This is the state that one is supposed to be able to achieve an astral projection from.
Once someone reaches this state then the next action is usually taught to be mental imagery such as floating upwards or rolling to the side. Both of which are supposed to cause enough pressure on the astral body to make it project outside the physical body.
It’s almost like you are trying to pop your astral body out of your physical body.
The problem is that the above mental imagery takes up mental energy. Most people can’t form images in their mind consciously that are sharp and vivid. This is the kind of mental imagery that is required to cause an astral projection.
The unconscious mind however can conjure images very easily. This is why dreams are so vivid. This is why dreams sometimes turn into conscious astral projections.
I’d like to present an alternative to mental visual imagery, mental visual imagery requires way much too mental energy and focus from a conscious mind.
Tactile Imagery. Tactile imagery is just imagining how something feels. It takes much less mental energy and focus to imagine how something feels than to create a mental picture of something that is only seen in the minds eye.
So, lets say that you are trying to astral project. You have made it to the trance state. Now instead of imagining yourself floating, and the mental image of that. Imagine how that would feel. Imagine nothing visual. Since your eyes are closed you will see pitch black. Imagine you are in a pitch black room and that you are floating. How does that feel?
Or instead of the mental image of rolling over, imagine the tactile image of rolling over. How does it feel to roll over, how do the sheets feel beneath you as you turn, or your hand feel as it grips the side of your bed to get up.
Again imagine only the tactile sensations.
Another one you can do is too imagine a rope above your bed. Imagine climbing up it in the dark. How does the rope feel in your hands? Again you don’t imagine how the rope looks, but how it feels.
In any case, imagine yourself moving away from your physical body, it is supposed to put pressure on the astral body and allow it to slip free from the physical body.
